Sun protection is the most important step in any skincare routine. It protects your skin from UV rays that cause dark spots, wrinkles and premature ageing. But how do you choose the right one?
What does SPF mean?
SPF (sun protection factor) measures protection against UVB rays, which cause sunburn. SPF 30 blocks about 97% and SPF 50 about 98% of UVB rays. For everyday use we recommend SPF 30–50.
What does PA+++ mean?
PA measures protection against UVA rays, which penetrate deeper and cause skin ageing. The more plus signs, the better: PA+ is the lowest and PA++++ the highest. Korean sunscreens almost always carry a PA rating.
Chemical or mineral sunscreen?
- Chemical filters absorb UV rays. The texture is light and leaves no white cast.
- Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) reflect UV rays. Great for very sensitive skin, but can leave a slight white cast.
Many Korean sunscreens combine both and use modern filters that are almost invisible on the skin.
How much sunscreen should you use?
Most people use too little. For your face and neck you need about two finger-lengths (roughly ¼ teaspoon). When you’re outdoors, reapply every 2 hours and after swimming.
Do you need sunscreen in the Nordics?
Yes. UVA rays pass through clouds and window glass and are present all year round. From spring to autumn the UV index in Estonia and Finland is high enough to damage your skin. In winter, sun protection matters most in the mountains and on snow.
Why Korean sunscreens?
- lightweight textures that don’t feel like cream;
- no white cast;
- work well under makeup;
- often contain hydrating and soothing ingredients too.
We recommend, for example, the Anua Zero-Cast moisturising sunscreen – light, invisible everyday protection.
